Etymology of Mammon

Mammon is a Latin Word meaning wealth and riches, Greek , Syriac and Aramaic have similar words

The Greek version of  "Mammon",  mamonas, is used in the Sermon on the Mount and in the parable of the Unjust Steward (Luke 16:9-13).  It is frequently translated as 'dishonest wealth'  or other similes.

The Chaldean or Syriac word for "wealth" or "riches" is also mammona, and in Modern times it is utilized in several Slavic languages  to denote Wealth - apparently tracing back to Biblical roots.

In the Greek pantheon Mammon was portrayed as Ploutos {Plutos} who was the boy-twin of the "wealthy" ruler of the underworld . Initially Plutus was the god of bountiful harvests but later he came to represent wealth in more general and negative terms.  With the arrival of the Christian Era he was replaced with Mammon in the popular Mythology.  Several Modern words have their origins in Plutos -Plutocracy: Rule by the wealthiest -- Plutonomics: The study of wealth management --  Plutolatry: the "worship" of money . The ancient Greek translation of the Jewish scriptures {Septuagint} in Psalm 37:3, uses plouto, in reference to "riches" and and a simile of mammon.

The Personification of Mammon

During the Dark Ages in Europe, Mammon was personified as the demon of wealth, avarice, and injustice.  Deriving form several New Testament passages in which  Mammon was personified as a false god. He/She has come to be used in reference to excessive greed and money lust as a negative influence

Matthew 6:24
No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Luke 16:9
And I say unto you, make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

Luke 16:13
No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mammon in The Hierarchy of Hell

According to a 16th Century German Jesuit priest and demonologist Peter Binsfield , the 7 princes of Hell equate to the 7 deadly sins.  Mammon was second only to Lucifer in the Hierarchy of Hell.   Binsfield was also involved in the inquisition era witch hunts and wrote "The Confession of Warlocks and Witches", which advocated torture as a means of extracting confessions from suspected Witches.  Binsfields Hierarchy runs as follows...

Lucifer
Mammon
Asmodeus
Satan
Beelzebub
Leviathan
Belphegor
